About Us
American Society for the Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries and Historical Objects in Poland (ASPJCHOP) was established and founded by the late Rabbi Mendel Reichberg ob”m in 1972 under the auspices of Grand Rabbi S. Halberstam of Bobov zt”l, Grand Rabbi M. Teitelbaum zt”l and Grand Rabbi H. Horowitz of Spinka zt”l. ASPJCHOP is continuing its vital work under its esteemed directors with the guidance of Jewish leaders.
ASPJCHOP is accredited for the restoration and preservation of many cemeteries in Poland, such as Lizensk, Sanz, Rezesow, Rymanow, Kozienice, Alexander, Dombrowa, Lancut, Dynow, Bochnia, Grybow, Ropshitz, Tichin, Lublin, Radoshitz, and Sieniawa amongst many others.
ASPJCHOP’s mission is to honor and preserve Poland’s rich cultural heritage by restoring and maintaining historic cemeteries. Our early efforts have saved numerous cemeteries from total destruction and oblivion, largely resulting from the devastation of the Holocaust and World War II, which led to the tragic loss, expulsion, and deportation of entire communities.
ASPJCHOP’s work is vital because these cemeteries serve as the last remnants of vibrant cultures and histories that were nearly erased. By preserving these sacred spaces, we not only honor the memory of those who were lost but also provide future generations with a tangible connection to their heritage. Our commitment to restoration and education fosters understanding and promotes healing, allowing communities to acknowledge their past and share their stories.
As a recognized not-for-profit organization under the IRS 501(c)(3) code, we strive to ensure that these living memorials remain accessible and meaningful. We invite all who share our passion for preservation to join us in this vital mission. Together, we can protect our past and inspire future generations to cherish the legacies of those who shaped our world.
